Ventilation Pattern & Inside View of Hairpiece

This is the vent pattern I used for the hairpiece.  Here the solid dots represent the ash brown hair, and the open dots represent grey.  I found this to be too dense, so next time I will stick to just the open hexagon pattern, essentially eliminating the positions where the grey hairs are tied.

Here is a shot of the inside of the piece.  It took me a while to figure out where to put the pleats.  I'm still not sure these are in the best place, but I think the most important thing is to keep them away from the front hairline.  I was worried that they would be really visible once the piece was attached, but the actually disappeared quite nicely (even though I only attached the piece over my own hair.  I'm sure they would be completely unnoticeable if attached over bare skin.)

  1. Are you using Asian needles or German needles to make your knots?

  2. -Sorry for the double post (I corrected few mistakes in my text but coudn't completely erase above line I typed few minutes ago.)
I think most Occidentals will say they prefer working with German needles as I found them easier to work with but I've seen Asian women in videos working so much faster using Asian needles; I guess you've got to get the hang of it (using Asian ones). By the way I find your new blog very interesting; May not interest everyone but for those that it interests you've already been very helpful posting few pictures & above illustration. I've found some infos here that I couldn't have ever get anywhere else. Thank you kindly :-)

    1. Thanks so much JD for your comments. I'm really happy you're finding some useful information here! I still have a LOT of learning to do, but I'm really happy to share whatever I pick up along the way with anyone who is willing to listen! :)

I find it really strange that people generally seem so secretive about their techniques. It can be such a frustrating challenge to find even the most basic information. There is a great book that I have found very useful: Wig Making and Styling: A Complete Guide for Theatre & Film by Martha Ruskai and Allison Lowery. However, as the title suggests, it is definitely geared towards theatrical wigs rather than hair for real-life wear.

As far as needles go, I think you're absolutely right - it just depends on your technique. The German needles are much more expensive and harder to find (at least here in Canada) so I definitely want to try the Asian needles again! I think, if I want to speed up my technique, then the Asian needles and a must! It seems that a different hand motion is required, I think due to the angle of the needle. More practice is required... if only there were more hours in the day!

    2. Did you make any pleats in your lace to make your self made unit fit better on your head? Next time you make a new unit we'd like to see the progress step by step. If you could pass any tips or suggestions along the way it would help very much. I already have German needles but today I ordered Asian ones after seeing an Asian woman working Very fast with those. I live in Canada too!
      Cheers!

    3. Hi JD, where in Canada are you? Montreal here. I did make pleats in the lace. I will try to take a photo of it from the inside to show what I did. I was worried that the pleats would be really visible once the piece was finished, but I was surprised how well they disappeared.

Definitely, I will be better about documenting the process of making the next piece. I have already started making tests to get the density and colour closer to what I'm looking for. I'm finding it quite difficult to match the piece to my own hair... I think it would be easier if I wasn't dealing with grey percentages as well as density and colour. But I'm getting closer. I will start posting pics soon.

    4. And please let me know how you get on with the Asian needles. I keep meaning to try again with them too, but finding the time isn't always easy... :(
